The water powered mill at Flatford was owned by John Constable's father, the area around the mill was the focus of a number of his paintings. Little has changed since John Constable's time and today's visitor can "step back" in time and see the buildings and countryside of his paintings. Flatford Mill is now a field study centre offering range of residential courses. It is not open to visitors. |
The water meadows are a haven for birds and other wildlife. If you visit with children, don't forget to bring something to feed the ducks.
After looking at the mill and Willy Lott's cottage, retrace your steps and cross by the river by the footbridge.

When you have crossed the river, walk down the bank for a little way to the spot where Constable painted Flatford Mill. You will see little has changed to this day. |

As you walk down stream you can see the mill race, very spectacular if the river is in full flow.

If you continue down the valley you can follow the course of the modern dyke built to keep the sea at bay. On your left are the reeds and tidal marshes of the Stour estuary, on your right the lush grass of the water meadows, teeming with plants and wildlife. |

After a short walk you will come to the old sea defences at Judas Gap. If you are feeling energetic, you can continue to the main road at Catterwade or onto Manningtree.
