Horse drawn barges used to ply the river Stour trading between places such as Flatford and Dedham and the docks at Mistley. Barges need to be maintained, maintenance needs dry docks such as the one that can be seen at Flatford.
What makes this particular on so interesting is that until very recent times it had been long forgotten. John Constable's painting Boat Building Near Flatford provided the inspiration to excavate the area and the dry dock you can see today was rediscovered.
